Check out the trend in wages since 1980
In 1980 a person with a High School Diploma or GED made on average $44,200, but wages have fallen dramatically since then. In 2008 it is at $32,000. Those with a college degree on average have seen an increase in pay by $2,700 over the same time, but those with a degree have make on average $12,000 less than they did in 1980. That is a disturbing trend for those without a college degree.
There are a lot of reasons for this and one is all of the manufacturing jobs overseas. Those jobs typically pay well and don't require a college degree. Another statistic from the census buearu shows that those with a college degree are less likely to be among the working poor.
People more than ever are obtaining college degrees which can put those individuals with a degree at a disadvantage.
